Outcome 1
Materials & Techniques
Materials & Techniques
To complete Outcome 1 each student will explore the range of photographic Materials & Techniques listed below and document their discoveries in their visual diaries with full annotations. In the first few weeks we will all explore Camera & Exposure together, as these concepts are fundamental to all the topics that follow. We will then split up into groups and take turns exploring the remaining processes.
Master your camera craft and be confident about your exposure in every situation for every creative outcome.
Discover the magic of the darkroom and the richness of every unique print you produce.
Unlock the power of studio lighting and how you can craft a precise look and feel to your images.
Refine your images in Photoshop to enhance and take them to new heights of creative expression.
Demonstrated your understanding of the above in your Visual Diary with at least 4 pages per material & technique, not including contact sheets.
Exposure: 2 pages of creative use of shutter speed, 2 pages of creative use of Aperture all fully annotated technically and creatively. This means documenting your actual camera settings and discussing in your annotations their visual and creative impact.
Film & Darkroom: 2 pages of explanation and documentation of film processing, 2 pages of explanation and documentation of darkroom printing, all fully annotated technically and creatively. This means documenting your actual camera and darkroom settings and discussing in your annotations their visual and creative impact. It will be very useful to take photos of the darkroom equipment as you go and include these in your visual diaries.
Lighting: 4 pages of creative use of lighting all fully annotated technically and creatively. This means documenting your actual camera and lighting settings and discussing in your annotations their visual and creative impact. It will be very useful to take photos of the lights and their positions as you go and include these in your visual diaries.
Photoshop: 4 pages of creative use of Photoshop all fully annotated technically and creatively. This means documenting your Photoshop settings and discussing in your annotations their visual and creative impact. It will be very useful to take screenshots of your Photoshop menus and dialogue boxes as you go and include these in your visual diaries.
Remember, we are not trying to create finished artworks here, we are simply exploring and testing the materials and techniques and documenting the visual effect of the various settings. There are no mistakes, just creative possibilities, so don't be afraid to take risks and try seemingly unsuual things, they could turn out creativly amazing!
