Being Inclusive Roundtable: Access and Services for Customers with Disabilities
Program Description:
This program will include a roundtable discussion of the work that has already been done by the Maricopa County Library District disability access work group, including the efforts by the Library District to provide more needed services to customers with disabilities, as well as a forum to engage with other librarians from around the state regarding this topic. Our group would like the participants to consider if there is a need to create statewide standards to make reasonable accommodations for customers with disabilities above legal requirements and, if so, what do those standards look like. What services and technology are library systems around Arizona already providing? How can all libraries connect customers with these available services and how do we as an institution invite those with disabilities into our branches and assure them that there is something for them. We will also hear from Clayton Guffey of AzTAP, or Arizona Technology Access Program and Vicki Thompson and Michelle Michaels from the Arizona Telecommunications Equipment Distribution Program , about the comprehensive and free resources that they are able to provide to libraries and individuals throughout the state of Arizona. Melanie Isaacs, of PAL Experiences, will also join us to talk about their services and discuss ideas for library programs for people with autism and anxiety. Topics for discussion might include: Low Vision Resource Centers Adaptive Technology - AzTAP, AzTEDP, other resources available, and its use in libraries ASL Interpreters Bank Pal Experiences and resources for library users with autism and anxiety DES Department of Disabilities Arizona Talking Book Library Library Programming Library Databases Library Materials Furniture and User Spaces.
