Cardinality refers to the direction that milepost numbers increase along the road. With some exceptions (see below), mileposts in Arizona start in the south or west and increase in one-mile increments toward the north or east.
The opposite direction is referred to as the non-cardinal direction.
When determining the cardinal direction of the road, it is important to pay attention to the milepost numbers. Cardinality refers to the direction the milepost numbers increase, not to the direction of the road. This is because there are several cases in Arizona where cardinality is reversed and mileposts increase from the north or east toward the south or west. Two examples are US 93 and SR 85.
The cardinal direction on US 93 between I-40 and Wickenburg starts in the north and ends in the south.
The cardinal direction on SR 85 between Gila Bend and Lukeville starts in the north and ends in the south.
