Our goal was to observe and record the abundance and diversity of pollinators in the school's science garden. We were collecting what scientist's call baseline data: counting how many pollinators we currently have. After we add more plants to the garden, we will count again and see if the new plants made a difference.
Each of the four, fourth-grade classes went outside to collect data on a day when the sky was clear and the temperature was 60 degrees F or higher. We worked in groups of three—one spotter, one recorder, and one photographer—and each group was responsible for one, 6' x 6' plot. We created six plots in the science garden, one by the edge of the woods, and another in the field by the driveway. We used this data sheet and followed this observation protocol during the count.
