National Junior Honors Society (NJHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. These five pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its’ inception in 1929.
The GATE Chapter of NJHS is advised by staff but is entirely run by student members. This is done through the use of committees:
School Service: This committee plans and organizes all activities that serve our school including after school tutoring, popcorn sales, supply donations, snack donations, school grounds cleanup, event volunteering, Little Free Library, and more!
Community Service: This committee plans and organizes all activities that serve our greater community including donating to local animal shelters and food pantries, park clean up, and volunteering hours at community events.
Fundraising: This committee plans and organizes all fundraisers that take place. Fundraisers support a variety of projects (donating supplies to local shelters, helping cover field trip costs, Little Free Library, etc.). While monthly Popcorn Sales are hosted by NJHS, this is not technically a fundraiser, as money raised simply goes back into purchasing supplies for next month's sales. This is why Popcorn Sales is considered "School Service" and not "Fundraising."
Induction Ceremony: This committee plans and organizes the induction ceremony that takes place at the end of the school year. In order for a student to officially become a member of NJHS, they must complete their annual requirements (as stated in the Bylaws) and be inducted into the Chapter during a special ceremony where they will receive a pin and a certificate of membership. The Induction Committee spends the year planning, organizing supplies, and inviting members and guests to this special event.
Advertising: This committee creates all materials that advertise for NJHS. These include informational flyers about fundraisers, formal invitations, thank you cards, motivational posters, and more!
