Credits granted upon completion: A completed assignment is equivalent to 5 instructional days of work. Ten (10) credits will be earned upon successful completion of all assignments and a grade of 60% or better on each test.
Course Standards:
1. Earth’s Place in the Universe: Students know how astronomy and planetary exploration reveal the solar
system’s structure, scale, and change over time, including standard sections 1a-g.
2. Students know and experience earth based and space based astronomy reveal the structure, scale, and
changes in stars, galaxies, and the universe over time, including standard sections 2a-g.
3. Dynamic Earth Processes: Students know how plate tectonics operating over geologic time have changed the
patterns of land, sea, and mountains on Earth’s surface, including standard sections 3a-f.
4. Energy in the Earth System: Students know how energy enters the Earth system primarily as solar radiation
and eventually escapes as heat, including standard sections 4a-d.
5. Students will know how the heating of Earth’s surface and atmosphere by the sun drives convection within the
atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents, including standard sections 5a-g.
6. Students will know climate is the long term average of a regions’ weather and depends on many factors,
including standard sections 6a-d.
7. Biogeochemical Cycles: Students will know each element on Earth moves among reservoirs, which exist in
the solid earth, in oceans, in the atmosphere, and within and among organisms as part of biogeochemical
cycles, including standard sections 7a-d.
8. Structure and Composition of the Atmosphere: Students will know that life has changed Earth’s atmosphere,
and changes in the atmosphere affect conditions for life, including standard sections 8a-c.
9. California Geology: Students will know that the geology of California underlies the state’s wealth of natural
resources as well as its natural hazards, including standard sections 9a-d.
10. Investigation and Experimentation: Students will know that scientific progress is made by asking meaningful
questions and conducting careful investigations, including standard sections a-n.
Method of evaluation:
1. Teacher observation and review of student work.
Quizzes and tests (mastery level 60% or better).
