Confirm adult services are in place before exit
Work closely with your student’s case management agency to ensure adult services, funding, and supports are active before the student leaves the school system.
Shift responsibility to the student whenever possible
Support your young adult in leading IEP meetings, making decisions, managing appointments, and communicating directly with service providers.
Prioritize real-world experiences and community access
Engage in employment, postsecondary training, transportation practice, and independent living skills that reflect adult expectations not school routines.
Plan for life after school services end
Understand the official exit date from school, what supports continue, and what family roles will look like once educational services conclude.
