The Rhetoric and Composition Department has a zero-tolerance approach to plagiarism. You are responsible for finding out what this is and learning how to avoid it. You are also responsible for the AUC guidelines on academic honesty and cheating available at: http://www.aucegypt.edu/academics/resources/acadintegrity/code/Pages/Violation.aspx
Students who take our CORE/RHET 1010 Persuasive Integrated Writing course must be able to cite in order to pass the course. We do not require the students to learn both APA and MLA; AUC faculty tend to offer one or the other style, letting the emphasis fall on the principle that different disciplines utilize different styles which all have separate stylebooks that nonetheless are referenced in the same way. To learn one style is to conceptually learn the ideas behind all citation systems, and why and how they are employed.
Students may submit their papers to the Writing Center (a free service available to all students) to make sure that they have followed the format required. You can ask for a signature (or stamp) from the Writing Center saying this paper has been seen. Students may also attend a session on Reference Works, a software that teaches them how to apply the correct formats for citations, either held by the library or by the Writing Center, and bring back a slip that is stamped saying they have attended.
