Group Presentation 1: On WALLS
(10% of final grade)
For this assignment you will work in small groups to select and give a brief (10 minute) presentation on an image/photograph of a wall, border, fence, etc., analyzing the aspects, appearance, language, structure, underlying assumptions, meaning, and intended reaction to these border constructions and evaluating how they work, and how they reflect desires on either side of these walls. The wall that you choose can be either a physical wall or a symbolic wall of some kind.
Students will demonstrate the ability to:
- Think critically about a text (in this case an image of a wall and the related concepts it represents)
- Deliver a well-organized and engaging presentation
- Work as a team (distribution of work, mutual respect and team synergy)
Presentation Requirements:
- PPT or Google slides (submitted to Turnitin before class)
- Image of a WALL (physical or symbolic)
- Introduction:
- Historical/current background on the selected wall
- Why you selected this wall
- Rhetorical situation surrounding the selected wall
- Body:
- How this wall reflects desires on either side of the wall
- Intended and unintended effects of this wall
- How far does the wall achieve its promise or intended purpose?
- Your opinion on/critique of this wall
- Conclusion:
- Summary of main ideas
- Restatement of significance of this wall and what insights you'd like your audience to take away from your presentation
- What you have learned about utopias/dystopias and inclusivity/exclusivity from your study and analysis of this wall
- If any group members are absent, your group must still be prepared to present on your assigned day. Therefore, make sure all group members have access to your PPT/google slides to be presented and are able to cover any points that an absent group member was supposed to cover.
- If you are unable to present with your group on your assigned day, in order to receive a grade for this assignment you will have to write a reflection paper on your group's chosen wall, covering the contents listed above. Minimum length is 500 words. Follow MLA formatting for your paper and submit to Turnitin before your group's scheduled presentation time.
Your presentation will be graded using the oral presentation grading rubric below.
