In response to the recently popular “hit the woah” trend, teachers have been “hitting the know” by sharing facts about themselves that are not commonly known.
Seventh grade language arts teacher Ann Durham has been hitting the know about her hidden hobby of taking coins out of public fountains. Ms. Durham has been collecting from fountains for over seven years.
“People make a wish and I just reach right in and scoop them up when they walk away,” Durham said. “I don’t have much use for the small coins. If I grab any pennies or nickels I just toss them back in and make a wish of my own.”
Ms. Durham has collected over $300 from fountains. She likes to spend her earnings on miniature ninja figurines.
“I currently have a collection of about 20,000 ninja figures,” Durham said. “I like to run my fingers through them when I’m stressed out, it’s extremely soothing.”
Eighth grade math teacher Jeremiah Carter has been hitting the know about his obsession with Korean pop music. He has a constant growing collection of over 40 albums by his favorite K-pop idols and groups. Some of his favorite groups include DTS, BlackOrange, and ENDO. He currently has merchandise for over 15 different groups.
“I’m definitely not ashamed of my love for K-pop!” Carter said. “I just love all of my oppas and I think everyone should too!”
Mr. Carter shares his love for K-pop on his Outstagram account, @dts.fanboy872. However, he’s not just a fan of Korean music, but also Korean dramas and Mukbang videos.
“I watch K-dramas whenever I find the time, other times I'm listening to K-pop,” Carter said. “I just love everything Korean!”
Sixth and seventh grade science teacher Mrs. Buhr has been hitting the know about her pet bumble bee, Barry Buhr.
“I try to take Barry for walks every day,” Buhr said. “He needs some changes of scenery after flying around the house all day.”
Being a pet bee, Barry Buhr loses many aspects of life that bees require. However, Ms. Buhr attempts to make his life as similar as the life of an average bee.
“I have lots of flowers around the house for him to pollinate with,” Buhr states. “He even has a hive outside that he goes to when he feels lonely from other bees.”
Orchestra teacher Melinda Wharton has been hitting the know about her hobby and career as an Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR, MeTuber.
“I think that the art of ASMR is beautiful and I decided to try it out for myself,” Wharton said. “I started recording videos of myself and my subscriber count started to increase.”
Wharton’s videos vary but are all focused around string instruments. From tapping on the side of the instrument, gently blowing inside of the holes, or lightly plucking on strings.
“I decided to use what I had around me for my videos,” Wharton said. “And as an orchestra teacher, the instruments seemed like the best option.”
Eighth grade social studies teacher Erin Carnahan hits the know by sharing her hobby as a gamer and Pitch streamer. Carnahan plays a variety of games such as Fortday, Digcraft, and Underwatch on her streams.
“I saw my kids playing some video games and I was instantly hooked. I started playing and eventually I made a Pitch account,” Carnahan said.
Although teaching is a very time consuming job, Carnahan has worked around her busy schedule and found time to stream whenever she can.
"I go live at least every week,” Carnahan said. “But my viewers get really impatient when it comes to waiting for my streams.”
