Fourth Grade

In this section there are many links, rubrics and expectations for fourth graders in the Lakeland Hills library. This page will help you be up on helps and expectations before, during or after assignments are made.

Library standards taught to fourth graders while they are in the library are as follows:

Power Standard

Grade 4

Pursue:Students read, view, and listen to different materials for a variety of purposes.

  • I can speak, write, or share in other ways about series or genres of books that I like.

Investigate and Think Critically:Students research, manage and evaluate information and solve problems using digital tools and resources.

  • I use the library catalog and other online search tools to locate information.

· I can find information from reference sources.

· I am beginning to use a research process (e.g. Big6), including citing sources to support ideas

· I am beginningto evaluate sources for relevance, authority, and bias.

Collaborate:Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others

· I canshare ideas that help others learn or contribute work to a group project.

Practice Digital Citizenship:Students demonstrate a clear understanding of technology systems and operations and practice safe, legal and ethical behavior.

· I practice safe, responsible sharing of information and demonstrate respect for the work of others.

Fourth grade students also receive social studies curriculum while in the library. The standards for social studies are based on Washington State Standards:

History

Geography & Civics

·Understand and demonstrate how citizens work together with their government to solve problems and make changes.

Economics

·Understands and analyzes the costs and benefits of people’s decisions to move and relocate to meet their needs and wants.

· Understand how people and events help move a region toward statehood.

· Understand and demonstrate how the geography of a region influences its economy.

· Constructs maps to explain the movement of people.

· Understand there are multiple perspectives regarding historical events.

·Understand that the geographic features of the Pacific Northwest have influenced the movement of people.


The Westward Expansion is used as a year long study while students attend the library. The portfolio for this study will be used as the Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) as required by the state of Washington for all fourth graders in Social Studies. The unit is divided into research, model building, reports, historical history writing, cooking period foods and much more.
