PROMISING YOUNG RESEARCHER
Padre Federico Faura (1840-1897) was a Jesuit priest who was born in Spain but settled into his assignment in the former Spanish colony of the Philippines. Assigned to oversee the Observatorio Meteorológico del Ateneo Municipal de Manila (now the Manila Observatory), he famously spearheaded the development of the Faura Barometer. The first instrument of its kind in the area, it accurately predicted incoming typhoons in the Asia-Pacific region, thus serving as an early-warning device that saved the lives of many. Outside this role, he also served as a Mathematics and Physics teacher in Ateneo Municipal (now Ateneo de Manila), famously mentoring talented students such as our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
