The verb in your learning objective determines the level of higher learning. It is easy to recall the year that Christopher Columbus sailed to America. It is more challenging to explain the significance of Columbus’s voyage. And more challenging still to defend a position on the issue.
Bloom’s Taxonomy is a hierarchical model of learning objectives into levels of complexity and specificity. The higher you go on the model, the higher order thinking skills are targeted.
When writing or re-writing course objectives, consider choosing verbs that challenge your students to a higher level of learning as appropriate. Try varying your verbs and scaffolding the higher order thinking as students’ progress through your course.
