A CS or RAS-AI student completing the Applied Project will be supervised by a corresponding CS faculty (with chairing rights) or RAS faculty . RAS students may work with a qualified faculty member from outside of the program who has been approved by the Graduate Program Chair. Consequently, to complete an Applied Project a student must first obtain approval of a faculty member to work with them on a project, and subsequent approval by Graduate Program Chair. The faculty advisor is then responsible for specifying the requirements of the project and for reviewing and approving the final report.
The Applied Project is a demonstration of application of theory to solve a practical technical problem of general interest. The subject matter of an Applied Project is more flexible than that of a thesis since the result is not expected to be published, although the project may directly or indirectly support research programs. The faculty advisor has responsibility for establishing the requirements of the project and for approval of the final written report and presentation. However, in all cases, the student must prepare and present the applied project to the faculty advisor and discuss the implementation and results of their project. This presentation will be open to all graduate students. A student will be considered eligible for graduation when the sponsoring faculty member approves the report and the presentation and a grade of B or better is assigned on the Applied Project course. See CSE 593 syllabus for course details.
Important Notes:
Given that students may not know their supervising faculty at the time of submitting the initial iPOS, Applied Project students will list the program faculty chair in the "Faculty Committee" page of the iPOS (see iPOS How-To Guide).
Students should plan to complete the Applied Project and enroll in CSE 593 in the final semester.
All students must obtain permission to register for the applied project course, CSE 593.
Computer Science students who wish to work with faculty who are not endorsed for CS (minimum co-chair) must find a faculty with CS chairing rights to serve as a co-chair.
Computer Science Cybersecurity Scholarship students must secure TWO cybersecurity faculty to supervise the applied project and may have additional scholarship requirements to complete as part of the culminating event. The scholarship coordinator is required to sign off on project requests.
Computer Science students admitted prior to Fall 2024: The Applied Project option will not appear on the iPOS "Degree Requirements" tab. To opt-in for this option, students will need to submit a petition request via the iPOS to change the requirement term to Fall 2024. Please only initiate a petition request if you have secured faculty to supervise an applied project. Advising can assist with submitting the petition as needed.
After successful completion of the applied project, students must complete the required SCAI Graduate Alumni Survey form. This is required for graduation processing.
