REFLECTION
The discussion of this module was in the same manner that module 1 was discussed wherein there was an assigned group for each topic who will initiate the learning of the lessons through games. I found this form of teaching a bit unusual but at the same time, I enjoyed it. There was no pressure at all since the only thing we need to do is to study the topics so that we could ace the games. Though we need to study individually or in other words, self-study, I could still say that I had learned the topics in this module. I guess the readings I have done were strengthened by the questions they gave us every game. It was a test of knowledge wherein everybody would cooperate and share his or her learnings from the modules. Nevertheless, I have realized in this module how significant the works of civil engineers, particularly transportation engineers. They are responsible for the geometric design of highways, pavement design, as well as traffic engineering. For instance, when we say the geometric design of highways, it pertains to the layout and physical elements of the roadway like alignment, lane width, sight distance, shoulder design, and cross-section, among others. When it comes to alignment, engineers should consider the speed and topography of roads before designing curves plus they should ensure that drivers would have a good line of sight for visibility. Meanwhile, pavement design, from the word itself, concerns with road surfaces. Here, engineers should consider the surface friction and smoothness of the pavement for the safety of the motorists. I think it is important that the pavement is not too rough and not too smooth, but rather it should be something in between. At the same time, these pavements should be strong enough to withstand the loads of even the heaviest vehicles. Furthermore, traffic engineering focuses on three things, namely, planning, design, and operation of the transportation system as a whole. Among the three topics, traffic engineering feels like the most difficult job for me because of its complexities and broad range. To name a few, it involves managing traffic flow, data analysis, and transportation networks, among others. Learning that all, makes me think of one thing and that is engineers are in demand up to this day. The never-ending development of the world gives engineers more job opportunities while at the same time helping to build a safe and reliable infrastructure. I can't wait to finish this course and start contributing to the world's development.
