PROJECT BASED SERVICE LEARNING
This is a semester length class (required for the Class of 2025 and beyond) in which students explore the concept of service learning and design projects to execute independently. 1 semester of course work is required, followed by another semester of independent study. All AST students must complete 60 hours of community service by the time they graduate.
INTERNSHIPS
AST offers internal internships to qualified students. An internship is a partnership between the student and the mentor with specific goals in mind. Students will complete weekly reflections and look to make progress towards a goal. AST currently offers internships on a Pass/Fail basis in:
Child Development (working with the Elementary School)
Science
Library Sciences
Athletics and PE
Marketing and PR
Students must fill out a contract with the mentor/sponsor and turn it in to the counselor
Teacher Aide. Definition: Student who functions as a class aide to the teacher; making copies, running errands, organizing papers, working 1:1 with lower grade students etc. No credit given, but can earn up to 15 community service hours per class (documented). 30 hours MAXIMUM. Teacher discretion on who becomes your aide.
Intern (internal). Definition: Student who is gaining experience and knowledge through a hands on application, guided by a mentor. The eventual goal is that a student could use this experience to apply for a similar paid position at university or in the private sector. Students must be interviewed, set goals, write weekly reflections, and will be evaluated at the end (self evaluation and external evaluation). Semester Credit will be given and it will appear on the transcript.
INDEPENDENT STUDY
Taking Independent Study for credit involves creating a plan and executing on that plan under the advisement of a faculty member.
The plan should include the following information:
Three to five Statements about Desired Learning.
These statements should describe specific skills to be developed or understandings to be gained. They should be related, but not overlap significantly.
Description of Resources.
This should include what resources will be used throughout the independent study and how they are to be accessed. For example, for web-based resources, stating Google or Wikipedia is not specific enough, however, you do not need to exhaustively list every web page.
Learning Artifacts
These are the papers and/or projects that will be completed over the course of the study as evidence of meeting the Statements about Desired Learning.
Timeline
This should state clearly when the Learning Artifacts are anticipated to be completed. These are not hard deadlines; they are approximations.
Faculty Adviser
Identify which member of the faculty has agreed to check-in with you periodically throughout your independent study. As a minimum, a student and adviser should be checking in on a monthly basis.
Credits
Please state the number of credits that will be earned upon completion and the graduation category these credits will be applied to.
Signatures
Once completed this plan should be dated and then signed (in this order) by the student, the faculty adviser, the school counselor and the Director of AST.
Modifications to the plan may be made by the faculty adviser at any time without the permission of the student.
Completion is determined at the discretion of the faculty adviser. Completion may be determined by the Director in the absence of the faculty adviser. A grade of A or P will be awarded upon completion. The letter grade A is reserved for exemplary work in the area of study of sufficient quality to be used for demonstration of the content to other students and published for AST use in a way appropriate to the content. The letter grade P is awarded upon completion of the work described in the plan. Upon completion of the course will be transcripted and the grade awarded.
