Although we practice in school as a group, musicians also need to spend time practicing on their own to individually improve difficult passages of music and develop their skills as an instrumentalist. The amount of time a student really needs to practice varies depending on their current level and the efficiency of their practice, but for grading purposes students are expected to practice at least 20 days per grading term (which is about 2 days a week on average) for at least 25 minutes per practice day. Practice times must be entered into the online Ashland Band practice chart within 7 days of practicing to receive credit.
Band members are expected to perform at all band concerts. Band concerts are always held at the Ashland High School auditorium, so it is very important students take their instruments and music home on the day of the concert because the middle school is often locked in the evening! Concerts are the culmination of months of classwork, and it is very important all students attend and participate. If a student is absent from a concert, it is harder for the other students to perform well and it won’t sound as good for the audience. If a family emergency or illness prevents a student from performing on a concert, a letter from a parent is necessary to prevent a grade reduction.
