This beginning Chinese course is designed to develop skills for communicating in Chinese with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. This introductory Chinese course will cover Hanyu Pinyin (Chinese pronunciation system) and Chinese writing system. Students will acquire Chinese communication skills through a variety of exercises. Since this is an introductory Chinese course, the emphasis will be put on cultivating students’ interest in learning the language and on introducing the customs and the beauty of Chinese culture.

This is the second course in Mandarin Chinese and the prerequisite for this course is Mandarin Chinese I. This level of Chinese class will continue helping students gain knowledge of spoken and written Chinese, using Chinese language meaningfully and properly in everyday life and real situations. The emphasis of this course will be on speaking, listening, and reading comprehension. You will also continue to learn how to write Chinese characters in traditional (fan-ti-zi) and simplified (jian-ti-ji) forms. During the course, you will learn to interact with others with a variety of topics. Together we will explore many interesting aspects of Chinese language and culture.

Honors Chinese III and IV are for students that want a deeper understanding of the language and culture that goes beyond the surface and grammar of a language. We will discuss Chinese history and literature, and students will do presentations in Chinese on various aspects of Chinese culture. In these courses students will read various stories in Chinese and write summaries in Chinese of the stories. Other oral and written reports in Chinese will focus on various topics such as a student’s life goals, future plans and careers. Also, the courses will include study and practice of Chinese characters and Calligraphy.

Spanish I

Spanish I is designed for those students who are planning to attend a four-year university and wish to learn to speak Spanish as well as learn about the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The student begins with oral work in the native language and learn to speak and to understand certain phrases. Grammar is introduced at this time but is not studied in detail until after the oral introductory period. Then the student begins to learn how sentences are formed by studying verb forms and memorizing vocabulary. Culture is introduced throughout the year as the students learn about the Spanish-speaking countries through readings and conversation.

Spanish II

Spanish II is designed for those students who are planning to attend a four-year university. At the beginning, Spanish II is a comprehensive review of Spanish I. Students are reminded that foreign language study is cumulative, and without a strong foundation in level 1 success is unlikely. Many new vocabulary words are taught, as well as new verb tenses, so that the student is able to speak more fluently. The culture of each Spanish-speaking country is emphasized through readings, slides, films, and other media.

Honors Spanish III is designed for students that are planning to attend a four-year university. This course deepens the understanding of culture and language over many of the Latin American countries. Honors Spanish III gives the student the opportunity to apply what he or she has learned in the two basic courses. The emphasis is on learning vocabulary in many categories in order to converse more knowledgeably in Spanish. A study of Spanish history, art, and literature is intertwined with the overall enrichment goal of the cultural aspect of this course. As an honors class, this is for students dedicated to language acquisition and production. A review of grammatical structure and verbs helps to define and correct problems encountered in oral and written Spanish.

Honors Spanish IV is designed for students that are planning to attend a four-year university. Spanish IV is for students who wish to refine their oral, written, reading, and listening abilities. A wide range of topics for conversation will be introduced. Reading materials will include newspapers and recent periodicals as well as literary excerpts. Advanced practice using verbs, grammatical structures, and vocabulary will be given in order to master the use of Spanish as a means of communication. Students will use the target language exclusively in class.

Advanced Placement Spanish Language

AP Spanish Language is a fifth level course. The course is designed for students who have mastered the fundamentals of the Spanish language and who are now ready to apply those skills in all subject areas. Communication and comprehension are emphasized. Students will improve their proficiency by various means, such as exclusive use of the target language in class, listening comprehension activities, challenging readings, extensive review of grammatical concepts, and AP practice tests. Students will increase proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. AP students are required to attend two out of three after school workshops in the Spring.
All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools.
