What is AP?
AP stands for Advanced Placement. The program, run by College Board, offers college-level courses in high school.
Why take AP?
Taking AP courses helps you to stand out to colleges and universities by showing them you are willing to work hard to complete college level work. (https://blog.collegeboard.org/3-reasons-take-ap-exams)
Earning a level 3, 4, or 5 on AP Exams allows you to receive college credit at many colleges and universities. (https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/getting-credit-placement/search-policies)
What about the AP Exam?
AP Exams are the first 2 weeks of May.
AP Exams are FREE for all Asheboro City Schools students. ACS pays the exam fee for you! For this reason, all students enrolled in AP Courses are expected to take the AP Exam. (https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/ap-exams-overview)

Advanced Placement Seminar
0A017X0
AP Seminar is a foundational course that engages students in cross-curricular conversations that explore the complexities of academic and real-world topics and issues by analyzing divergent perspectives. Using an inquiry framework, students practice reading and analyzing articles, research studies, and foundational literary and philosophical texts; listening to and viewing speeches, broadcasts, and personal accounts; and experiencing artistic works and performances. Students learn to synthesize information from multiple sources, develop their own perspectives in research based written essays, and design and deliver oral and visual presentations, both individually and as part of a team. Ultimately, the course aims to equip students with the power to analyze and evaluate information with accuracy and precision in order to craft and communicate evidence-based arguments.
All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools.

AP Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, or issue of individual interest. Through this exploration, students design, plan, and conduct research based investigation to address a research question. In the AP Research course, students further their skills acquired in the AP Seminar course by understanding research methodology; employing ethical research practices; and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information as they address a research question. Students explore their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of the development of their scholarly work in a portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of 4000–5000 words (accompanied by a performance or exhibition of product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.
All students will be required to take the Advanced Placement test in May. The cost of the exam will be paid by Asheboro City Schools.

Advanced Placement World History: Modern
4A097X0
The AP World History: Modern course focuses on developing students' understanding of world history from approximately 8000 B.C.E. to the present. The course has students investigate the content of world history for significant events, individuals, developments, and processes in six historical periods, and develop and use the same thinking skills and methods (analyzing primary and secondary sources, making historical comparisons, chronological reasoning, and argumentation) employed by historians when they study the past. The course also provides five themes (interaction between humans and the environment; development and interaction of cultures; state building, expansion, and conflict; creation, expansion, and interaction of economic systems; and development and transformation of social structures) that students explore throughout the course in order to make connections among historical developments in different times and places encompassing the five major geographical regions of the globe: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

Advanced Placement Precalculus
2A047X0
AP Precalculus centers on functions modeling dynamic phenomena. This research-based exploration of functions is designed to better prepare students for college-level calculus and provide grounding for other mathematics and science courses. In this course, students study a broad spectrum of function types that are foundational for careers in mathematics, physics, biology, health science, social science, and data science. Furthermore, as AP Precalculus may be the last mathematics course of a student’s secondary education, the course is structured to provide a coherent capstone experience and is not exclusively focused on preparation for future courses.
During this course, students acquire and apply mathematical tools in real-world modeling situations in preparation for using these tools in college-level calculus. Modeling, a central instructional theme for the course, helps students come to a deeper understanding of each function type. By examining scenarios, conditions, and data sets, as well as determining and validating an appropriate function model, students develop a greater comprehension of the nature and behavior of the function itself. The formal study of a function type through multiple representations (e.g., graphical, numerical, verbal, analytical), coupled with the application of the function type to a variety of contexts, provides students with a rich study of precalculus.
