Introductory Art introduces design concepts and skills of working with various art media. The course focuses on Teaching Artistic Behaviors such as creative thinking, collaboration with peers for ideas, research for inspiration and exploration of various artistic ideas and methods. Introductory Art welcomes students who do not feel like they can draw in order to help them find their creative voice. Included also is a broad general introduction to the history and styles of artists. Introductory Art includes experiences in drawing, painting, printing, collage, sculpture, and design.

Creative problem solving, collaboration, development of personal styles and interests and modern art movements will be explored. Independent projects and portfolio development will be an expectation. Band
Fall Concert Band/Marching Band: Grades 9-12 Fall and Concert Band: Grades 9-12 Spring
The Asheboro High School Bands are for qualified 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade instrumentalists and continue the musical skills developed in the middle school program. Students who have not participated in the 8th grade band must audition to qualify. All band members are expected to participate in marching band, which runs concurrent with the football season. Several parades are included. However, the bulk of the year is spent in a concert band setting in preparation for three major concerts: Winter, MPA (Music Performance Adjudication), and Spring.
The Symphonic Band is open to all grades 9-12 band members. Emphasis will be placed upon continued musical development through a variety of popular and classical literature.
The Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony are open to grades 9-12 band students by audition only. These smaller groups will concentrate on a wide variety of advanced literature, including opportunities for smaller ensembles, conducting and arranging. Students may apply to receive honors credit.

Jazz Improvisation/Jazz Band
This is an advanced music performance class designed for instrumentalists who wish to explore the art of jazz improvisation. The class is open to current members of concert band and/or those with piano, guitar, and bass guitar skills. If necessary, auditions will be held to establish a reasonable instrumentation for a standard jazz band. Students will delve into theory, history, and practice of jazz and will participate in intensive listening and playing exercises with computerized and live accompaniment. Regular concerts will be scheduled and required throughout the year. This is a “zero period” class, meeting daily at 7:30-8:15 am. Both semesters are required for one honors credit.

Mixed Chorus

Emphasis is placed on the basic fundamentals of proper singing and the development of musical skills. A wide variety of choral music is studied. A wide variety of choral music is studied and performed, ranging from popular to classical, sacred to secular. While the course is designed for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, advanced freshmen may qualify for participation through auditions conducted prior to registration. Preparation for and participation in all concerts is required. Activities during the year include fall, winter, spring, and end-of-year concerts, and district Music Performance Adjudication. Students at this level may audition to participate in state events such as All-State Chorus. This course may be repeated for credit.

Honors Ensemble (Chorus Proficient Honors)

Honors Vocal Ensemble is the most advanced choral group at AHS. Students are selected through an audition process, and qualified students must have successfully completed at least one year of an auditioned high school chorus or band ensemble. While the course is designed for juniors and seniors, advanced sophomores may qualify for participation through auditions conducted prior to registration. Preparation for and participation in all concerts is required. Activities during the year include fall, winter, spring, and end-of-year concerts and district Music Performance Adjudication. The group will perform in all school choral concerts and in various other situations, such as state festivals and community events. Students at this level may audition to participate in state events such as All-State Chorus, Honors Chorus, and other similar events. In addition to performing, the students will develop musicianship skills including interpretation and analysis of standard and non-standard musical notation, chord structure, musical form, and vocabulary. Students may apply to receive honors credit.
