One of the leading theories for the cause of Alzheimer’s disease is the cholinergic hypothesis, which suggests that Alzheimer’s disease is mainly due to the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved with memory and learning. Rivastigmine manages AD and PD dementia by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, thereby preventing the hydrolysis of acetylcholine. We will use a C. elegans model to determine the effectiveness of Rivastigmine. Two groups of transgenic NL5901 strains will be used, one of which will be exposed to Rivastigmine. We will perform the Nile Red staining assay to test the efficacy of Rivastigmine on lipid concentration. We predict that the NL5901 strain that has been exposed to Rivastigmine will have a higher lipid concentration than the control strain.
