Social Studies:
Curriculum for 6th grade social studies is very comprehensive. It covers the majority of the 20th century. Starting with migration into North America and ending after the Cold War.
Science:
6th grade science curriculum consists of two hands-on activity based kits. The kits are rotated throughout the year. The themes for the 6th grade science kits are ecosystems and energy. I will begin the year with ecosystems and finish the year with energy.
ELA (English Language Arts):
We will be using SpringBoard ELA curriculum. As taken directly from the SpringBoard website, "SpringBoard helps students build extensive content knowledge with close reading and analysis of texts, critical viewing of select films, wide-ranging independent reading, and lively, engaging classroom discussion. Language skills and knowledge are incorporated as part of an integrated approach to reading, writing, speaking, and listening."
SpringBoard is used throughout 6th thru 8th grade in the Anchorage School District. Therefore through using SpringBoard curriculum, Aquarian 6th graders will be getting a foundational start to carry on with them into middle school.
Health/SEL:
6th grade health curriculum is taught directly from the Great Body Shop. We’ll focus on a variety of topics including safety, hygiene, staying active, making healthy choices, eating well and much more. I will end the year with Human Growth and Development. We will be using both the Second Steps and Positive Actions curriculums for our Social, Emotional Learning.
Math:
The Saxon Math curriculum taught at Aquarian is one of the reasons our school is unique from others! Math at Aquarian is a school-wide collaborative effort in which all of the student’s ability needs are met. The math block is first thing in the morning daily from 8:30-9:45. I will be teaching Saxon Math Course 2, please see more information regarding to Course 2 under the "Saxon Math Course 2" tab.
