Student Homework Planner:
We provide all students with a planner. The number one form of student-to-home communication will be the student's homework planner. I require students to write their nightly homework assignments in the planner. I do not require parents to sign student's planners at home, but if it becomes apparent that students are not writing in the planners resulting in not turning in homework, I will require parent's initials on a nightly basis.
Binders:
I expect each student to have a 3-ring binder. Binders should be kept organized and include the daily homework planner and all paperwork necessary for assignments. Students should keep corrected assignments in their binder. A parent should be able to look at a student's binder and see assignment handouts and graded work. Keeping organized is a very important skill for students to learn before they move on to junior high and middle school.
Grading:
My experience has been if students turn in work on time, they will do well in school. Most students who receive unsatisfactory grades are not getting their work turned in, or it is very late. Assignments turned in late go down 10% for every day it is late. No late work will be accepted turned in later than one week after original due date. I will be using Q-Parent Connect as my gradebook. Parents and students will have access to their grades via Q. I encourage families to check grades on Q as often as needed. I will send home progress reports in the middle of each quarter for all students.
GRADING SCALE - A = 90 - 100% B = 80 - 89% C = 70 - 79% D = 60 - 69% F = 59% and below
Homework Policy:
Homework will be assigned every week. Due dates will vary depending on assignment. Homework assignments will be recorded daily on student’s planners. If assignments are turned in late, 10% will be deducted per day for a maximum of five days. Please check the class calendar for upcoming due dates.
Discipline Policy:
I expect good behavior in the classroom!
I follow the same discipline policy as laid out by the Anchorage School District, found in the ASD Student Handbook. Please make sure you cover the rules and guidelines laid out by the district with your child.
My basic classroom policy is that if an action or activity, behavior or practice is getting in the way of another child’s safety and/or ability to learn (or his/her own safety or learning), then it must be addressed and corrected. This covers a large spectrum, but it is also basic and fair. I am not allowed to take away from another person’s right to learn in a safe, fair, and productive environment.
When a behavior crosses the line, I give the student or students a warning. If it continues, I will ask him/her to take a time out from the group. The third strike results in the student visiting a buddy room or the principal’s office. Parents will be notified if a student reaches the third strike. I may contact parents anytime I feel they need to know of a discipline problem.
Lunch / Snack/ Recess / Dress Code:
Please pack both a healthy lunch and a healthy snack. I discourage unhealthy food, but I’m not prepared to be the food police. Students are welcome to have snacks whenever needed throughout the day. I do not provide snacks. Water is the only drink allowed in the classroom except for special occasions.
The Aquarian dress code is outlined in the student information from the office.
Parent Volunteers:
When we get back to a face-to-face model, I will be reaching out to parents to ask for volunteer help.
