Happy Thursday,
Attached you will find this week's newsletter. Weekly newsletters will come out each Thursday. Each newsletter will be posted online in my "Class Blog" - https://sites.google.com/asdk12.net/monica6thgrade/home
Feel free to reach out to me via email or Remind at any time with questions or concerns.
See everyone tomorrow,
- Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
We've had a fun, and busy second week! I have attached this week's newsletter with the highlights. Please take a moment to look through it and note the important dates.
Tomorrow is our field trip! Parent drivers, please be here at Aquarian by 8:45 for us to gather into groups and hit the road. The weather isn't looking too good but we live in Alaska and we all know weather can change. When we get to Girdwood if we decide the weather or trail conditions for North Face are too bad, we will hike the Winner Creek trail instead. If the conditions are okay we will head up the mountain. We have enough drivers to keep the car sizes small however, both parents and students are required to wear their masks the entire time we are in the car.
Students must bring the following for tomorrow's trip:
rain gear
good shoes
lunch
water bottle
backpack to carry all their supplies
Have a great night and I am excited for tomorrow,
-Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
Tonight your 6th grader is coming home with a survey ASD is asking families to fill out. Please fill it out and return it back to school before this Friday, September 3rd. I also attached the survey to this email as well.
Thank you,
-Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
Math started on Monday and everyone is doing great with the new routine! It's amazing to me, this group of kiddos hasn't had the opportunity to rotate to Math since 4th grade but they have swung back into it without missing a beat. This truly is a great group of kids, I am proud of them and all the hard work they are putting forth.
I've attached is this week's newsletter. Please look it over as soon as you can.
Have a great night, I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.
-Monica
Happy Thursday,
Please see the attached newsletter for important class information and upcoming dates.
One thing I would like to highlight...
~ Next Tuesday (9/14) we we will be walking with our little buddies (Ms. Brenda's class) to the Korean Church on 33rd and Wyoming. This is the spot we go to if our building becomes unsafe for any reason. If you have not already turned in your child's walking field trip permission slip (attached) please do so by Monday, the 13th.
I wanted to finish with a brag about your amazing kids! They worked so hard throughout this short four-day week and the highlight for me was watching them create posters bases off the prompt, "What makes a good story?" from the narratives we are reading in SpringBoard. I have uploaded pictures to my website for you to see!
Have a great evening and I will see everyone tomorrow,
-Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
Happy Thursday! Attached is this week's newsletter, please read through it for happenings in our class.
A couple things I would like to highlight:
I have attached the 6th Grade Alaska Safe Children's Act lesson outline for you to see. I will be teaching the required 1st quarter lesson next week.
Our class will be MAP testing September 29th and 30th. Please do your best to make sure your 6th grader is here at school for those dates. Middle schools use MAP data as a guide to help with class placement, so it is important for students to be here and try their best!
October 16th, is Aquarian's Trunk or Treat. I have attached a flyer with more information.
As always, reach out to me at any time with questions or concerns.
Have a great rest of your week,
-Monica
Happy Thursday!
Attached you will find this week's newsletter, please take a moment to look it over.
A couple things I'd like to spotlight...
Next Thursday and Friday (9/29 & 9/30) our class will be MAP testing. Please do your best to have your 6th grader here those two days. Testing will begin after math.
I've attached this year's Science Fair Packet. Encourage your 6th grader to start thinking about what they want to do for their project.
As always, let me know if you have any questions.
-Monica
Happy Thursday,
Attached is this week's newsletter. You will notice quite a few upcoming events happening over the next couple weeks, once of which is parent/teacher conferences. Conferences are a time for us to sit down and talk about how your 6th grader did throughout the 1st quarter. Click this link to sign-up for a conference. I am also happy to do phone conferences or Zoom conferences as well, just please let me know if that's what you would prefer.
October 14th is Aquarian's 7th Annual Jog A-Thon. The Jog A-Thon is PTO's one and only fundraiser. PTO graciously pays for our 6th grade camp and because of that we have set a goal for each 6th grader to raise $100 for the A-Thon. I attached an informational flyer for you to see as well.
Don't forget to visit our class website for the most up-to-date class news, upcoming events, and class photos as well! I have added pictures of us building our eco-columns for you to enjoy.
That's it for today, enjoy this gorgeous fall day!
-Monica

Don't be surprised if your 6th graders is a little extra tired tonight after today's Jog-A-Thon. Everyone spent the entire 45-minutes running, jogging, or walking. They did great and I am proud of their hard work!
Attached is this week's newsletter and please see the message below from Mrs. Brittany.
Dear Sixth Grade Families,
This year, elementary 6th-grade students and 6-8 middle school students will use the Anchorage Schools District’s adopted English Language Arts program, SpringBoard by College Board. This program follows the standards appropriate for this developmental age, however it does not provide handwriting instruction or require a weekly spelling test. It does include teaching vocabulary and morphology, which will increase students’ word knowledge and comprehension abilities. Because of this instructional shift and because middle school report cards do not include spelling and handwriting, 6th graders in ASD elementary schools will also not have handwriting or spelling grades assigned.
This program is engaging, rigorous, and is aligned with 6th grade English Language Arts standards. You are welcome to reach out to me with questions regarding our implementation of SpringBoard.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Brittany
I hope everyone has a great weekend.
-Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
I'm back! I was out the majority of last week due to a fun, but busy trip to Las Vegas watching my kids play in softball and baseball tournaments. I apologize for not sending home a weekly newsletter last week, you will be getting one this Thursday.
I have attached this year's science fair packet. I am asking for my 6th graders to turn in their entry forms by November 30th.
The Science Fair Committee is looking for judges. Use this link to sign-up. Thank you in advance to everyone willing to help out!
-Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
I have attached this week's newsletter, please take a moment to read through all the happenings of Room 6.
You will also find a letter attached from Ms. Brenda regarding donations for troops. Here is a little blurb she asked for us to pass on:
Hello Aquarian! With Veterans Day next week, we felt it is a great time to get started on collecting donations for our troops. Please read the attached letter for ideas on ways you can help. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for your help! - Ms. Brenda
If you have a chance to do so, I encourage you to stop in and take a look at the art your 6th grader has created. Their charcoal owls are hanging up in the hall and they are truly amazing!
That's it for today,
-Monica
Happy Veterans Day!
I hope you are out enjoying this lovely new snow! Winter is definitely here! With the new snow, please remind your 6th grader to bring the appropriate gear (coat, boots, hat, gloves) to school tomorrow for brain break and recess.
I have attached this week's newsletter, please take a moment to read through.
-Monica
If you are in the Goldenview district, please see the information below, this is specific for you.
We will provide a space here at Aquarian for the 6th graders who are zoned for Goldenview to login and view the Zoom on February 15th but please know, they will be missing instructional time to watch the Zoom. If you prefer your 6th grader to not miss any instructional time for the Zoom just please let me know ahead of time.
Reply back to me if you plan to attend the in-person tour on Wednesday, February 23rd. It is up to families to provide transportation, we will not be going as a class.
As more information comes from other middle schools I will pass it on to each of you.
-Monica
Good Afternoon from Goldenview,
It’s that time of the year again--6th Grade Tour planning!
We are in the process of making the 6th grade tour schedule for our annual February visits with our incoming 7th grade students. We will be doing a zoom presentation for all schools and an in-person tour for each school.
We are hosting a 1-hour ZOOM presentation on Tuesday, February 15th at 9:30 am OR 1:15 pm as part of the 6th grade transition process. We will be presenting information about class choices, school life and other topics for middle school students.
We have selected dates for each school to attend the Goldenview 6th Grade tour. Transportation for this is up to each school, please make arrangements for your school. We plan to start our tour at 12:30 pm and should be wrapping up around 2:00 pm. Please do your best to make these dates work for your school. We look forward to hosting you on Wednesday February 23, 2022.
Thank you for your support and help with the initial planning of our annual 6th grade tours. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hello 6th grade families.
I have attached this week's newsletter, but I wanted to highlight a few important items:
Next Wednesday is our class bake sale. I am happy to let 6th graders work the sale but I need permission from parents in order to let them to do so. I also will need a few parents who are willing to help monitor the sale as well.
Key things to know about the bake sale:
The sale will take place outside, so please dress warm.
Parent volunteers and students working the sale must be wearing masks and plastic gloves (I will provide the gloves).
If possible, please wrap items in their own individual packages.
With Thanksgiving the day after, it would be wonderful to have Thanksgiving themed items (pies, cookies, etc) for families to buy.
Winter MAP testing will take place on December 8th and 9th for my class.
Student's 2nd Independent Reading book is due next Wednesday, the 24th.
That's it for today, please reach out to me if you have any questions.
Bundle up and stay warm,
-Monica
Hello 6th grade families,
Happy Wednesday! This week's update is coming a day early due to Thanksgiving break and no school tomorrow or Friday. Please take a moment to read this week's newsletter (attached). I also attached the Science Fair entry form for anyone who still needs a copy.
I hope everyone has a lovely four-day weekend. I am so thankful for each of my 6th graders and being their teacher, it truly is a joy!
-Monica
Hello 6th grade families!
Attached is this week's newsletter. Please look it over sometime within the next couple days.
There are two things I would like to mention that are not included in this week's newsletter.
We are doing a book exchange with our little buddies. I am asking my 6th graders to bring in a book (already wrapped would be wonderful) to give to their little buddy from Ms. Brenda's kindergarten class. We will provide you with a list of books or topics your 6th grader's little buddy would like to help make your shopping a little easier. If you are not able to purchase a book, that is completely a-ok, please just let me know ahead of time so I can get any books that will be needed. We will exchange books with our buddies on Monday, December 13th.
Aquarian's Science Fair is happening on January 27, 2022. I ask for all science fair projects be brought into school on Monday, January 24th. This gives us time to practice our presentations and make sure there isn't anything students forgot to put on their board. Click here to access the science fair packet.
That's it for today, have a great rest of your week!
-Monica
Two things I wanted to pass on to you before Thursday's weekly update.
First, we are planning to do a book exchange with our little buddies for next Monday, December 13th. Your 6th grader is coming home with a note on what their little buddy is interested in. Please have a book, preferably wrapped, here at Aquarian by this Friday. If you can’t purchase a book that is a-ok, please just let me know and I will take care of getting the book for you.
Second, we will be MAP testing Wednesday and Thursday. The 6th graders voted to do math first, so we will do Math tomorrow and ELA on Thursday. Encourage your 6th grader to get a good night's sleep and a hearty breakfast. The results of MAP testing is a large part of placement into classes for middle school so it is quite important for students to take these assessments seriously.
That's it for today, look for more information coming home on Thursday.
Thanks,
-Monica
Hello 6th grade families, happy Thursday! I'm blown away at how quick the time is flying by and we only have one more week of school until Winter Break!
Attached is this week's newsletter, please take a moment to read it over but here are a few things I'd like to highlight:
Next week is Spirit Week
Monday - Ugly Holiday Sweaters
Tuesday - Holiday Hats and Headbands
Wednesday - Favorite Holiday Character
Thursday - Holiday Pajamas
Thank you to the families who have already sent in their books for little buddies. If you haven't done so, please have your 6th grader bring it in tomorrow.
Progress Reports are coming home tonight. This is our last check-in before the end of 2nd quarter. If your 6th grader needs to make corrections to any assignments or has any missing assignments, they need to have them done and ready to turn in by Monday.
3rd Independent Reading book should be done by tomorrow.
If you are leaving town, please make sure to let me know ahead of time in order for me to put together any missing work.
That's it for tonight, as always reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
-Monica
Hello 6th Grade Families,
No newsletter this week just a quick email.
We are unbelievably at the end of the 2nd Quarter. The time has flown by! Friday is a grading day and all assignments MUST be turned in tomorrow for credit.
It is supposed to warm up tomorrow so we will be sledding. Please double check that your child has gear (snowpants, boots, jacket, gloves, hat) at school tomorrow to make the trek down to Hermit Park. We will either be sledding or just playing in the deep snow. We will be leaving school around 10:45 if you'd like to come join the fun!
Thank you for all your support so far this year. It has definitely been an adjustment after a year of online learning, but I'm so excited to jump into the 2nd semester with these amazing kiddo's.
I hope this winter break gives you a chance to play together as a family and rest!
Happy Holidays,
-Monica
Hello 6th grade families and happy 2022! I am so glad to be back at school teaching your amazing kiddos. I have attached this week's newsletter, please take a moment to look it over.

Reminder, there is no school on Monday to honor Martln Luther King Jr's Birthday.
Have a great evening and we'll see you tomorrow,

Hello 6th Grade Families,
A few things to mention in addition to the newsletter:
Science fair projects can start coming in on Monday the 24th. This gives us plenty of time to do a practice presentation and for me to offer any feedback. It also gives me time to grade them before they go to the judges.
I am sending home flyers about Romig's Highly Gifted program to the students who were interested. There are many great options in the ASD for middle school, I encourage you to take the time to find a program that works best for you and your family.
I hope you have a lovely Friday and relaxing weekend,

I plan to provide transportation for Aquarian students who would need it because I will be taking Owen. Let me know if you are interested in having your 6th grader attend the tour and if you would like me to take him or her with me. If so, I will send home a permission slip for you to sign.
Thanks,
-Monica

Hello 6th Grade Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break. Welcome to the 4th quarter! 3rd quarter report cards will be coming home with your 6th grader today.
We have hit the ground running and we are planning on going at a pretty strong pace until May. What that means for you, is please make sure that you are checking in with your child on assignments and things that need to get finished throughout this last quarter. I have attached the newsletter with info on our class happenings, however I wanted to highlight a few things:
We are planning an informational meeting for camp and 6th grade promotion on March 24th at 3:30 here at school. If you would like to help in any capacity for these two things please try and make it. We are planning on having zoom open so if you can't attend in person consider attending VIA zoom. We will also send out cliff notes of the meeting as well.
Lastly, April is a big month of testing, with both STAR and MAP testing taking place. Please make sure you let me know if you are planning to be out in April.
That's it for tonight.

Hello 6th Grade Families,
I've attached this week's newsletter. Please note, we are currently on hold with next week's AK STAR testing. As soon as I know more, I will let you know.
I've attached an informational flier for Romig's Open House, coming up on April 12th.
For those of you who still need to fill out permission slips required for camp, I've attached another copy to this message for you to print and sign.
Lastly, please take a moment to read the message below from our 6th grade promotion committee chairs, LeeAnn Garrick and Missy Conley:
Hello Sixth Grade Parents,
Planning for the sixth grade promotion is getting started! As Ms. Monica explained earlier, the promotion party is scheduled from 3 - 5 pm on Wednesday 05/18 at the Kincaid Chalet following Aquarian's all-day end of year celebration at Kincaid. Each sixth grade student will be delivering a brief speech at the promotion event so the actual party part will be from 4 - 5 pm. It's a short timeframe after a long day of play but enough to make some lasting fun memories!
Ms. Monica and Ms. Sarah took polls of the students last Friday to see what they hope to see at the event. Of the 41 responses, 21 students requested a dance and 15 requested a photo booth. Current theme feedback includes "Under the Sea" and "Carnival/Big Top." Ms. Monica and Ms. Sarah reminded us that we should plan a celebration that reflects the students' accomplishments and allows them to spend a fun time all together but doesn't need to be too complicated or require families to purchase expensive dress clothes.
We have $1,000 from the Aquarian PTO which should get us pretty far. If we have $20 donations from all sixth grade families, we'll be able to do much more.
We currently have the following parents signed up to assist with the event. If we missed you, please let us know if you'd like to be part of the committee:
Meagan Kowatch
Carrie Boese
Kim Amar
Kristin Tenny
Susan Aquino
Angie Lantz
Lana Cates
Jessica Nangle
Tyler Dann
Ann Reed
Laura Kanyer
Rick Bivins
Sondra McCotter
Kelly Schnese
Tierra Bradford
Johanna Pohland
Danni Hall
Ashley Ellingson
We are planning on a Zoom meeting in the next week to discuss tasks, themes and budget. We'll ask Ms. Monica and Ms. Sarah to send out that notice when the date is finalized.
Thanks so much,
LeeAnn & Missy
I hope you have a nice end to your week and enjoy your weekend,
-Monica
