At Kellands School, we are committed to developing an inclusive communication approach throughout our learning environment.
Communication is a fundamental human right and by using an inclusive approach we enable our pupils to be included and supported to reach their fullest potential. For some of our pupils, the use of inclusive communication is fundamental to their ability to participate and actively contribute to their learning. Please read the Inclusive Communication Policy.
People with Developmental Language Disorder have difficulty talking and understanding language. If a child has DLD, they might mix words up in a sentence or misunderstand what you’re asking them to do. A lifelong condition, it’s often called a “hidden disability” because it’s not always obvious that someone has DLD. Please view and download the staff training on Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) to gain a better understanding of DLD and ways to support learners who have DLD.
Colourful semantics is an approach to support spoken and written language learning across the curriculum, and it is also a common approach used in speech therapy. It aims to help children develop skills when it comes to sentence development, understanding questions, developing narrative, understanding written text and developing vocabulary. Colourful semantics are often used to support children with speech and language difficulties, including those who have difficulties with word order, vocabulary difficulties or expressive and receptive language difficulties. At Kellands, we use Colourful Semantics across the school. Please view and download the staff training on Colourful Semantics.
