In their projects in this IDL, it was important for pupils to understand the opportunities and challenges that different locations present when looking to design a sustainable habitat. In order for pupils to have first hand experience of this, they visited several locations around Bennachie, with Garioch Ranger Alison Sutherland, to learn more about the history of Bennachie, including previous settlements and opportunities and challenges that must be considered when planning a successful sustainable settlement.

As part of our material research, we undertook some strength text experiments to determine the best material to use for different applications. For example, some of the materials need to be strong and others need to be flexible.
Pictures of our final sustainable habitats for the Scottish Highlands are shown below. We have also created presentations to outline the different aspects of our final designs.
