It was 3 wonderful days of teaching, learning and laughing.

Corona time = Online time

The fourth partner meeting in the ARTinLAN should have taken place in London. But like so many other events these days, this one had to be held online.

It was a very good experience to see how effectively a long meeting can be, if you make sure to have the right amount of breaks and the online platform doesn't collapse under pressure. We held our meeting in Adobe Connect, and although we felt the strain on the platform the first day, on the second everything went smooth and we got through all of the agenda.

We are now collecting and processing all of the feedback from the teacher pilots, and putting them on the website. Next up is to hold a conference to present this great project to the world.

The conference has been postponed till the first week of September, and it will be held in Lodz, Poland.

Ready - steady - pilot!

The ARTinLAN activity set, which comprices 30 different teaching activities that target pupils aged 6-12 who are learning a foreign language, is now ready to be piloted by teachers in the 6 partner countries. The Activity Set is based on a survey conducted earlier in the project among language teachers, which identified 17 spoken and written language competences in level A1 - A2 that are more difficult to teach. The activities target these 17 competences using the art forms music, visual arts and crafts, dance, drama, creative writing and digital media tools

The partners have also set up the ARTinLAN platform the "Global Virtual Village", which will be used during the project for teacher commmunication, cooperation and online class exchanges.

From June 2019 - March 2020 approximately 30 teachers will pilot the Activity Set and the Global Virtual Village give feedback on the usability, results and potential of the Activity Set and Global Virtual Village. The pilot will culminate in online events where the teachers conduct class exchanges online using the Activity Set and let the pupils communicate and conduct artistic activities together.

Third partner meeting in Viksjöfors

On June 18 - 19 2019 the partners met again, this time in Viksjöfors, Sweden for the third partner meeting in the project. The focus for the meeting was on finalizing the first output - the ARTinLAN activity set, which teachers in the 6 partner countries will start piloting from August 2019. Therefore, the project also focused on finalizing the guidelines and plans for the teacher piloting in order to ensure a good process.

Finally the partners started planning for the upcomming teacher training, where the teachers will meet halfway in the piloting process and exchange experiences, learn about the theory behind the project and plan an online exchange event that will take plance in March 2020.

Second partner meeting in Adana

On March 6-7 2019 the partners met in Adana, Turkey for the second partner meeting. The focus was on developing the first output for of the project - the ARTinLAN Activity Set, which will comprise of 30 activities using artistic activities such as Dance, Music, Visual Arts and Crafts, Drama and Creative Writing.

During the meeting the partners went over the a suvery, which was conducted among teachers in the 6 partner countries. The survey identified which language competences among the The Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEF or CEFR) at level A1 and A2 the teachers identified as most difficult to teach to students aged 6 - 11 years. The partners identified 17 competences, which will form the basis for the activity set and made a plan for the development.

Moreover, the partners made plans for the upcomming testing of the Activity Set with local teachers and decided on the design and layout of the online platform - the Global Virtual Village, which will be used for communication and exchange among the teachers during the testing.

Which language competences?

From December 2018 - February 2019 the ARTinLAN project is conducting a survey, targeting language teachers, with experience teaching a foreign language at a beginner level to children aged 6 - 11 years.

The aim is to identity key language competences that the project partners will use as a basis for the teaching activities and tools that will be developed in the project. The project is using the European Language Reference System CEFR, with a focus on the first two basic user levels A1 and A2.

The Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEF or CEFR) was put together by the Council of Europe as a way of standardising the levels of language exams in the different European regions.

Recruiting teachers

One of the first and most important elements of the ARTinLAN project is the primary school teachers that will be recruited for the project.

A total of 30 teachers (5 from each of the 6 partner countries) will be recruited in 2019 to participate in the testing and development of teaching activities and tools that combine language and art education. The teachers will be working with an activity set, developed by the project partners, and based on this, they will be developing and testing a multitude of activities, while exchanging and inspiring eachother across country boarders.

The teachers will also participate in a shared training in Brno, Czech Republic in November 2019 and conduct 2 event days in March 2020. In the event days, the teachers and their pupils will communicate and exchange activities with their international peers using the project platform - the Global Virtual Village.

Kick-off meeting in Vejle

In October 2018 the ARTinLAN project was launched. It will be running for two years where the project's 6 partner organisations will meet and develop a number of innovative educational tools linking language and art education. These tools will then serve to promote the acquisition of foreign languages for school children.

On November 26-28 2018 the partners met for the first time in Vejle for a kick-off meeting. The aim was to get to know each other, make strategies and action plans for the project activities and plan the first phase of the project.
