GCSE subjects are academic and exam-based, with some subjects having a practical/coursework element, for example, Art, DT...
Cambridge National Certificates, WJEC, NCFE, BTECs and City & Guild subjects are vocational (this means they link to jobs directly) and include more focus on coursework which gives students time to work on their grades and submit excellent work, resulting in less emphasis on terminal exams.
All of the above qualifications are LEVEL 2. Students are advised to include at least 1 or 2 vocational subjects in their subject choices. Students are also advised to study at least 6 GCSE subjects - this includes core subjects.
Below is an alphabetical list of all subjects - core (these are mandatory and include English, maths and science) and optional. You will notice the subject (in bold) is hyperlinked to provide information about jobs which link to that subject. There are also additional links with even more job ideas! This might be a useful tool in helping your child decide which subjects to choose. Suffice to say, an excellent criteria for choosing a subject should include performance and enjoyability! *both combined and triple science will enable students to study individual sciences at A Level should they wish to do so
There are some subjects which you cannot study together, for example PE and Sport, Food & Nutrition and Hospitality & Catering, Music and Music Technology, Business and Enterprise & Marketing. All of this is explained on the Options webpage.
