Work Due: One pager
Assignment: Find 5 connections (intertextuality) of what you have read before for tomorrow's class
Prayer
Share the connections you made between or among texts that we have already read.
Why would intertextuality be an important idea when discussing world literature and in the context of Adichie's "Single Story"?
Read the biography on Kafka p. 136 and Background on p. 137 (You can find the full text in your Google Classroom)

Continue Metamorphosis
Start chapter 2 using close reading strategies in small groups. Using the printed document, highlight what the margin asks and then respond to the question and conclusion it wants you to draw. Throughout the entire document, look for uses of figurative language: similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, understatement, etc. Highlight the figurative language and then explain the use and effect in the margin. Many argue that beyond just anxiety and the feeling of being trapped, this is an anti-capitalist story. Can you find evidence that would support that?
Work Due: Have finished reading chapter 1 for class time
Assignment: Chapter 1 questions due tomorrow

Intertextuality: View Metamorphosis Short Animated Film
Intertextuality: Read from "Samsa in Love" by Haruki Murakami (Japanese author)
While reading, consider what you have learned related to Theology of the Body. Consider:
Samsa is discovering his human body. I have censored the parts that are extremely explicit, but there are references to puberty-like revelations.
Are the two making choices that would offend God?
Are the actions amoral?
What role does free-will have in the story?
The story references not knowing much about being human, including praying. Will interaction with her bring him closer to God? Why or why not.
Work Due: Have finished rewriting of the ending before class time if not done yesterday in class
Assignment: Finish reading the excerpt from"Samsa in Love" for Tuesday's class

Discuss "Samsa in Love"
What elements are similar? Is this vertical or horizontal intertextuality.
What can we infer about this pair of texts about world literature? Note: Kafka is from Austria/Germany area in the 1800s and Murakami from Japan now.
Compare and Contrast the two pieces. What do the writing styles have in common? What about the writing styles are different?
Which of the two stories is more enjoyable? Why?
Kafka was influenced by Ovid's Metamorphoses (700 AD Roman written in Latin), and Murakami was influenced by Kafka. What can we infer about humanity based on the 1300+ years of "conversation" about transformation?
Work Due: Have finished reading from "Samsa in Love"
Assignment: Write MEAL paragraph explaining how "Samsa in Love" and "Metamorphosis" relate to the concept of intertextuality.
