As educators, it is important to continue to research and learn about current methods and issues to improve our practices in the classroom. In my Current Issues in Education course at APU, I extensively researched students in poverty. Through this literature review, I was able to find the cost of U.S. child poverty, homelessness within students in poverty, the programs in place to support these students, as well as their school performance. As many of these students fall through the cracks of our education system, it is important for educators to notice these students and know the programs that are in place to help guide these students. It is crucial to understand that these students face many challenges outside of the classroom that have an effect on students academic performance, readiness, and resilience inside the classroom. This artifact demonstrates my ability to research, synthesize, and develop as a professional educator. Researching students in poverty allowed me to begin developing as a professional educator (CSTP 6) and taught me how truly important it is to never stop learning and growing for my students.
