All kinds of assessments are a crucial and necessary part of teacher instruction. Being able to assess students learning before, during, and after a lesson or unit provides the teacher feedback on the students prior knowledge of the content, how much they are retaining, and then the knowledge that they gained. Through the credential program at APU, I designed a comprehensive unit and assessment plan with embedded field work. This unit and assessment plan allowed me to use CSTP Standard 5, Assessing Students for Learning. In a kindergarten class I included a pre-assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment in a math unit with the focus on adding to ten using manipulatives. From the planning and implementation of this unit and assessment, I learned that assessments allow teachers to make the best decisions for their students based on the data they collected. Doing this allows teachers to take different approaches, and create lessons and units based on the students needs. This will allow for learning to be more efficient and effective.
