In my classroom, students have the power of choice. Students are asked everyday to check the "View Your Work" section in Google Classroom so that they can be proactive learners and stay on top of their assignments. However if students fall behind there are many ways to catch up. For example, students are provided late work tickets. There is also a speaking money system where the reward for earning extra money is removing zeros or skipping assignments. This encourages students to speak more Spanish. When practicing conversations students are encouraged to use the RACE technigque by restating and answering the question. Students are often paired randomly for conversations which gets them out of their comfort zone but creates meaningful interaction with their peers. This is for Spanish 2 and 3. Speaking money is accumulated in the bank by recording on Flipgrid or speaking in class.
By checking Google Classroom consistently students are able to manage their workload. Because we have a cumulative gradebook, work that is turned in at any time can be applied to the semester grade. One tool I want to integrate is a choice board now that I've curated many resources for one topic. Instead of students doing all six activities for one topic they will be able to choose three. This will hopefully cut down on the amount of postings in Google Classroom which cause confusion for some students. It will also give us more class time for collaborative projects.
I try to model positive behavior in the classroom. We talk about how to present ourselves in Flipgrid to show we are active listeners and speakers. The way I communicate electronically is very important. I stick to the facts and do not use emotion in text messages or feedback. My goal is to also give timely feedback, where I get back to the students within 48 hours of them sending a message.
Students use private messages in Google Classroom or Remind to communicate with me outside of the classroom. I have office hours and try to respond within 48 hours.
Students use a variety of resources for learning. For each unit of study there are multiple ways to read, write, listen and speak Spanish.
One tech tool that has changed my classroom drastically has been Flipgrid. Students who are shy and do not want to speak in front of the class will engage in Flipgrid since it gives them so many options for recording themselves.
I allow multiple attempts for assignments. Google Forms allows you to set the limit for attempts. Google forms can also allow students to see which items they missed but the correct answers so that their second or third attempts are authentic. This data can be populated into a Google Sheet and sorted by student name and period to see their growth and easily grade their highest attempt. Giving students more attempts makes them feel in control of their grade in the class and more confident in the material we are studying.
Rubrics can be programmed into Google Classroom to give students detailed feedback on a project. They can also be reused. As long as students turn in a project by the due date they are welcome to review the rubric and resubmit projects with corrections and revisions.
