Students are often unsure or afraid of asking questions directly. Google Classroom offers them a safe space for them to ask about their work, ask for clarification and respond to feedback for different assignments. Students understand what is expected of them in my classroom because we able to communicate clearly with one another.
Being proactive is an important skill for students to develop. I have set up Remind classes so that students can communicate with me there for any reason. If they are sick and absent then they can let me know instead of just not showing up to class. Students who are absent for long periods of time can use Remind to stay up to date in class and together we can figure out a plan for keeping up with schoolwork. I also send students their schedule for the day if it is differen then normal.
Students are not given seating assignments. Attendance is taken by checking phone pockets and seeing which phones are missing. Desks are set up in pairs and depending on what type of assignment it is they are paired or grouped randomly using Classdojo. If doing a Flipgrid video recording assignment, timers are used for time management.
The first thing students see when entering the classroom is the Daily Agenda projected from Google Slides. This is also posted in Google Classroom. Students always have the first 10 minutes to get their chromebook, get logged in and warm up in Duolingo (a self-paced language learning program)
Students receive daily points for attendance. If they are gone, even for an excused absence they can submit an absent form using Google forms in the Resources section of Google Classroom. It gives them a chance to earn back their points as well as check what they missed in class.
Students can turn in late work. This is managed in Google Classroom by completing "Late Tickets". I have set the Google Form to alert me in my email when these tickets have been submitted so that I know when I need to grade late work.
On days that I can't be with the students, I leave them announcements in Google Classroom so they can stay on track. I schedule assignments to open when they get to class.
