We're happy to have you! Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of our program. These steps are written for interested students. Teachers should look at the resources at the bottom of this page. There are a few basic steps you can take to start Model UN at your school:
You will need a staff member at your school to sponsor your club. This person will need to hold meetings, organize your school's participation in Model UN events, and make sure that you comply with any school policies about student organizations.
While most Model UN sponsors are social studies teachers, we also have English language arts, foreign language, and elective teachers involved.
If your school already has Mock Trial, Speech & Debate, or Youth and Government, consider asking the sponsors of those groups, as Model UN has a lot in common with them.
Once your club is established, the sponsor should reach out to us at newmexicomodelun@gmail.com to join our mailing list, and get up-to-date information about our events.
Most Model UN clubs meet once a week, either during lunch or after school. Find a time that works for your teacher and your group. During meetings, you could have practice debates, research upcoming committee topics, brush up on Model UN procedure, or discuss current events. See the resources at the bottom of this page.
These workshops were presented by the UNM World Affairs Delegation at our 2025 Opening Session. These would make great activities for your meetings!
These are some resources to help teachers get started with a new Model UN group. Some may be slightly out of date, but provide a good overview. Thanks to Benjamin Wagor, former Model UN sponsor at Mandela International Magnet School in Santa Fe, for putting this together!
