According to the United Nations Association of the United States (UNAUSA), Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and its other multilateral bodies where students perform an ambassador role while debating topics such as gender equality, climate action, global health, and more. Through public speaking, critical thinking, and in-depth research, the Model UN experience allows students to cultivate skills and enrich their global affairs knowledge.
In New Mexico, Model UN can be taught as a class or as an extracurricular activity at the middle school and high school level. Although NM Model UN does not offer a class syllabus, as a network of teachers (advisors) across the state, prospective advisors are welcome to collaborate within the network to design a class. Most Model UN clubs in the state are operated as an extracurricular activity.
