The Office of the Registrar serves as the official depository for all academic records, undergraduate and graduate. Here are just a few of the services the Registrar’s Office provides:
plan and implement registration for classes
compile and maintain academic records
provide official transcripts
certify enrollment status
process official withdrawals from the University
plan and manage the University’s commencement/graduation ceremonies
process applications for graduation
process former students who wish to re-enroll
The AppState Registrar provides information on all the subjects listed above and much more!
See "Adding a Course".
A registration hold may be placed on a student’s account to deny access to the Web Registration System (WRS). All holds must be cleared by the appropriate office(s) before access can be granted. For example: If you have an unpaid cashier bill you will need to contact the Student Accounts office to pay your bill and have your hold "lifted" (Information on billing can be found at Student Accounts or by calling 828-262-2113). A different example would be if you have not had your high school transcript sent to the University, you would need to clarify what to do to get that hold lifted with the Registrar's Office or the Admissions office. You can check your registration status through AppalNet Self Service in order to determine if you have any outstanding holds.
uDesk is Appalachian's virtual desktop solution. Students can access a custom-built Windows operating environment from any device with an active internet connection. uDesk allows students to access university-licensed software found in campus computer labs.
uDesk creates a virtual Windows instance inside your web browser, allowing you to access a university build at any time. Frequent users can even install the uDesk Horizon Client on their machine to bypass the web browser entirely.
The policies for repeating courses and grade forgiveness apply to all undergraduate students. To understand these, let's start with some definitions of repeating courses and grade forgiveness:
Repeat:
any course taken more than one time
Grade Forgiveness:
removing the grade from the GPA calculation once a course is repeated
the grade stays on the transcript, but the GPA calculation excludes the course
the hours are included in attempted hours
there is a limit of four grade forgiveness courses (must be different courses) and the first grade is always the one excluded
More information on repeating a course:
All repeated courses are included in attempted hours.
You may only earn credit hours ONCE per course, regardless of the number of times the course is taken. (A few courses are repeatable for credit if the content changes. These are indicated in the Undergraduate Bulletin course descriptions.)
If you repeat a course that you originally passed and fail that repeat, you will lose ALL credit for the course.
If you already have credit for a course at ASU, you cannot take the course again at another institution and transfer it to ASU.
For more information about Appalachian's Repeat policy visit Registrar and click Resources and then Policies.
All first-year students must meet with their University College advisor before starting their first semester and until they have 30 earned credit hours. This required advising meeting will be where they receive their PINs (personal identification numbers), which will allow them to access the registration system.
After a student officially declares their major, they will then need to contact their major departments to inquire about how advising is done in that department. For example: A student has officially declared their major in Graphic Design (this is different from an intended major). That means their major is a program in the Art department within the College of Fine and Applied Arts.
A complete list of all Majors/Minors, and the departments and colleges to which they belong, can be found here.
Many departments have required advising for all students. Students who have not declared by the time they have 60 earned hours will have an advising PIN placed on their account that will deny them access to registration until they have seen an advisor to declare or discuss why they have not yet declared. Undeclared students who are on academic probation will also have required advising.
{Transfer students who do not declare their majors right away will also have required advising, regardless of how many hours they transfer to Appalachian.}
