The Office of Student Research (OSR) was established in 2005 to expand the opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in research and mentored scholarship at Appalachian State University. Students who understand how discoveries are made in their chosen fields are well-prepared to address the unsolved problems of the future. The OSR has a variety of resources, including financial support, to help research become a distinctive feature of the undergraduate and graduate experience at Appalachian.
It is a common misconception that online classes are easier than “in-person” classes. Students who prefer to have someone available for frequent face-to-face contact are likely to have trouble in an online environment where that kind of interaction may not be available. On the other hand, students who are highly self-motivated and independent may flourish with the freedom offered by an online course.
Some general ground rules for success in an online course are:
must be able to motivate yourself to work on a regular schedule
must take responsibility to focus on your own studies without anyone looking over your shoulder
must have access to a reliable computer (either your own or one in a University computer lab)
must be comfortable with and proficient in using the Internet for communication and research
These are not the only considerations for every online class, but if you meet these criteria, an online course may meet your needs. Please visit AppState Online for more information.

Orientation is a one-day on-campus or virtual experience (depending on your student status and availability) that helps prepare and acclimate students to Appalachian State.
Welcome to App is an extension of your summer orientation and is geared toward helping you learn your way around campus, making friends, and learning more about the university before classes start. The schedule includes programs that will help you feel comfortable and confident about life in and out of the classroom. Many of the events are just about making friends and having fun!
