The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, sometimes known as the Buckley Amendment, mandates that, with the exception of “directory information,” no student data can be released without the written permission of the student. Parent access to information can be granted through an option on your AppalNet account. You may grant your parents/guardians access to some or all of the following types of information: Academic Records, Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Housing, Varsity Athletics, Office of Disability Resources and/or Conduct Records.
Make sure you understand how your financial aid works. Visit Financial Aid to learn more about financial aid. You may also reach out to your financial aid counselor by email (financialaid@appstate.edu) or phone (828-262-2190).
Keep in mind that your financial aid can be affected by academic choices. Dropping below 12 hours, withdrawing, or taking courses that do not meet degree requirements can impact your current and future aid. Failure to attend class can also affect your aid, as can a low GPA or failure to make adequate progress toward a degree. To avoid problems, make sure you understand the terms under which you are receiving aid, and please reach out to the Financial Aid Office to understand how changes you make to your schedule will impact your aid or future eligibility for aid.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the courses you are enrolled in are required for your degree program as listed on the appropriate Program of Study. Courses not required for your degree program may not be counted in the enrollment status for financial aid eligibility. If you are registered for courses that do not meet your degree requirements, your financial aid could be adjusted or canceled accordingly.
Military affiliated students who plan to use VA Education Benefits (GI Bill) should contact Student Veteran Services once they have been accepted to Appalachian and have registered for classes. The folks in Student Veteran Services will help students process their GI Bill paperwork so they can receive benefits.
Fixed Tuition is a program passed by the North Carolina General Assembly that requires tuition rates to be fixed for a maximum of 8 consecutive semesters (not including summer sessions) for qualifying NC residents attending any UNC system institution and pursuing their first bachelor's degree. Eligible students enrolled full-time or part-time can receive the Fixed Tuition benefit.
The program is designed as a cohort model. For example, eligible students who enroll for the first time at Appalachian State for Fall 2022 will be charged the tuition rate for Fall 2022 for the next 8 consecutive semesters of their enrollment. Visit Student Accounts Fixed Tuition for more information.
The Four Year Guides are meant to serve as examples of how a degree can be completed in four years. Because each student’s situation is different, you will probably not be taking courses in exactly the order they are listed on the guide for your major, but you should use the online guides to tailor the degree requirements to meet your own graduation goals. Any AP, IB, or transfer coursework can affect your specific four-year plan. Work with your advisor (especially your major advisor after you declare) to adapt the four-year guide to your situation.
