A Cal Grant is money for college you don't have to pay back. Cal Grants can be used at any University of California, California State University or California Community College, as well as qualifying independent and career colleges or technical schools in California.
There are three kinds of Cal Grants:
Cal Grant A
Cal Grant B
Cal Grant C
Cal Grants are for students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree or vocational or career training. In addition to meeting the financial criteria and Cal Grant requirements, you must:
Submit the FAFSA or Dream Act application and your verified Cal Grant GPA by the May 2 Cal Grant deadline
Step 1: Submit the FAFSA or CADAA
Step 2: Confirm GPA submission to CSAC
Step 3: Create a Webgrants 4 Students account
Step 4: Accept your Cal Grant when it has been processed
Cal Grant A – annual access award up to $6,000 plus:
CA Community College: $0 for Tuition and Fees*
California State University (CSU): Up to $5,742 for Tuition and Fees
University of CA (UC): Up to $12,570 for Tuition and Fees
Cal Grant B – annual access award up to $6,008 plus:
CA Community College: $0 for Tuition and Fees*
California State University (CSU): Up to $5,742 for Tuition and Fees
University of CA (UC): Up to $12,570 for Tuition and Fees
Cal Grant C (Technical/Vocational Programs only) – annual access award up to $4,000
CA Community College: $0 for Tuition and Fees.

University of CA (UC): not applicable
Cal Grant A covers most the cost of tuition and fees at public or independent four-year colleges.
Cal Gant B helps cover living expenses, transportation, books and supplies, and some tuition and fees for low-income students.
Cal Grant C helps students in technical, occupational, or career training. It can also help cover books, tools, and equipment.
For students who plan to transfer directly from a California Community College to a 4-year university.
For students who are not eligible for the Cal Grant entitlement awards.
For current and former foster youth students.
