O67 is a high 6th grade math class taught by Mr. Dudley. Students in this class have the following profile: high potential math learners, organized, independent workers and self-starters.
The O67 class will move through the 6th grade curriculum at an accelerated pace. The course content will cover all 100 sixth grade state standards and expose students to key 7th grade standards. Students will have the OPTION or OPPORTUNITY to independently practice and quiz on the 7th grade standards introduced in class. (This is what the O stands for in O67.) Unlike E67 and G67, O67 students will be graded primarily on 6th grade standards.
Purpose of O67
O67 is designed to raise a student's math profile through challenging coursework in a low risk environment. It is the perfect course for students who want to challenge themselves. Students in O67 control their own course destiny. The more time they devote to independently studying the seventh grade standards, the more they will learn.
O67 Grading Structure:
Tests 60% (6th grade standards only)
Quizzes/Other Class Activities 30% (will include some 7th grade material completed in class or as assigned HW)
Homework 10% (primarily video work)
Optional 7th Grade Work 0% (Students and parents will be able to see student scores on optional/independent 7th grade work. However, these assignments and assessments will not impact their grade.)
Due to the grading structure, O67 is not as rigorous as the G67 and E67 courses. In addition, O67 students will not learn as many 7th grade standards as students in the other two accelerated courses.
Typical Lesson in O67
The class will quickly go through the 6th grade target for the day in the first 30-40 minutes of class. Remaining class time will be used to introduce, practice or reinforce key seventh grade standards.
What does the Optional 7th grade work look like?
Students will have the option to independently reinforce/practice the 7th grade standards by completing a worksheet and then taking a quiz on the learning target after school.
After School Hours (often referred to as Duddy Hall or PM Math Help)
After school hours are from 2:40-4:40 Monday through Thursday (we often stay till 5:00). Friday we are here from 2:40-3:40. On Fridays we NEVER stay late!
Mrs. Carruthers an Mrs. Wooten help staff Duddy Hall each day. They are both excellent teachers and very familiar with the curriculum. We try to schedule Duddy Hall so that there are always 2 teachers available to help students.
Students from my G67 and E67 class will be staying after school as needed to complete their required independent study work. I try to make myself available the entire time to help students who are struggling with independent work or class assignments. During the high volume weeks, I set up an appointment schedule.
Is it possible for O67 students to grade advance in math at the end of the year?
Absolutely! Students that work hard all year long, complete the optional work and really embrace the classroom activities will have a strong chance of grade advancing their math learning track in seventh grade. However, like the E67 and G67 courses, grade advancement is not guaranteed. Students in all classes have to earn an invitation to grade advance by performing well on the Algebra Prognosis test in March and the MCA test in April.
