Oliver Wendell Holmes (August 29, 1809 – October 7, 1894) was an American writer during the Romantic literary period, even though his primary vocation was a physician. Given the comfortable themes and subject matters of his work, he is considered a member of the Fireside Poets. His most famous literary work is The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table (1858). While being an important literary figure in the 19th century, he is also recognized as an important medical reformer. The focus of this section will focus on two of his more popular short poems: "The Chambered Nautilus" and "Old Ironsides."
