Explicitly teaching and offering opportunities for children to practice social, emotional, and behavioral skills.
Early childhood Social and Emotional Learning is a process within the family, school, and community in which all young children are provided with equitable opportunities to exercise lifelong cognitive skills. These skills provide a foundation for social, emotional, and academic well-being, and are essential for continuous learning and healthy development. Through SEL, children exercise skills that establish a foundation for becoming confident, caring, and productive members of their communities.
Science shows us that the development of SEL skills requires emotionally supportive environments where children can
experience trusting relationships and agency,
cultivate positive self-esteem and cultural identity,
safely consider the thoughts and emotions of oneself and others,
and, with varying adult support, explore strategies to regulate their emotions and navigate social and personal challenges.
The explicit teaching of social, emotional and behavioral skills and integrated opportunities to model, practice, and receive feedback throughout a school day are essential components of AppleTree Schools' Tier 1 PBS system.
