"Creativity takes courage" ~ Matisse
Drawing from life or from photos will increase your drawing skills, even if the drawings don't come out the way that you'd like. Practice (not talent, or expensive art supplies) practice & desire are all that's required.
DRAW FROM LIFE: the most helpful thing that you can do to increase your drawing skill is to look at something, anything, and try to draw it the way that it looks. Whatever you have around you can be the subject of a drawing. Remember, practice is the key! Nobody needs to see these drawings. They might look good or not, it's the practice that's important.
Here is an example of the progression of drawing from life. These were done with 3 crayons: grey first, then brown & black, and it was done on the back of a piece of mail. We can make art using whatever we have. Drawing our shoes is a classic art school assignment. Try it!
