Major concepts in reading include:
Seeing oneself as someone who enjoys reading
Seeing characters as complex and developing theories about their motivations
Grounding theories about texts in evidence
Naming and supporting themes and authors’ messages in texts
Using information gained from a variety of nonfiction texts to develop a thorough understanding of a topic
My goals for your child in reading:
To love reading
To pay attention to what they understand and don’t understand
To develop personal ideas about texts, based on information in the text
To analyze how authors’ choices affect our interpretation of a text
Reading is taught using a reading workshop structure, with ample time for the teacher to work with small groups and individuals so each child develops the specific skills they need to thrive and enjoy reading.
