SEYFS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Southeast Youth and Family Services has been providing professional counseling in Southeast King County for over 45 years. Our internship program has a long history of providing support and training to new therapists in the King County area.
WHO WE ARE
Our therapists are trained mental health counselors & clinical social workers who use a developmentally appropriate, client-centered approach to meet adults, youth, and families where they are at. Our therapist team is representative of the diverse community we serve.
Adults, Couples, Children, Adolescents, Young Adults, and Families. We specialize in working with youth and families to help them work through the concerns they identify as important in their lives.
We provide relationally oriented psychotherapy. We focus on helping people enhance their ability to better understand themselves and those most important to them, and deepen their understanding of the social and cultural contexts which impact their lives. We approach each client with respect, deeply value collaboration and are dedicated to creating a space safe enough for you to share what you do know, and for us together to expand your knowledge and create new connections, in your mind, as well as out in the world with people you care about.
We believe that fostering self-compassion and incorporating an understanding of the ways our brains process and encode experience are essential to bring about change and build resilience. We will explore ways to enhance your resilience in order to manage the difficult and often complex circumstances you may be facing.
We help people better understand repeating patterns that may be causing distress, so that new ways of moving forward are possible. Interns learn clinical skills for working with clients who experience concerns, such as:
Depression
Anxiety
Relationship Issues
Work Related Concerns
Trauma
PTSD
Life Transitions
Parenting Concerns
Family Conflict
Please read some of the most frequently questions asked below, and feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have.
The internship program can be the right choice for applicants who desire growth and change in their clinical abilities. It is also a good fit for interns who are interested in working in an agency where the staff reflect the community we serve.
SEYFS has experience supporting interns from many local Mental Health Counseling and Social Work programs and are knowledgeable about their requirements. After submitting an application for the program, prospective interns have an opportunity to speak with a supervisor to get a sense of whether or not the program is a good fit. SEYFS selects some applicants for interview and during that process there is additional opportunity to ask questions about the program.
Interns have a dedicated supervisor who they receive support from. A minimum of 1-2 scheduled hours of supervision are typical. Interns are also part of the SEYFS Clinical Team and participate in team meetings.
Additionally, interns may have the opportunity to work together with SEYFS therapists providing groups or family workshops, or working with a therapist who is able to act as an interpreter. There are also often opportunities for informal consultation with other therapists.
Hours are Monday through Friday. There are some required meetings, and some flexibility dependent on meeting client needs.
We typically offer services in the office, and sometimes at schools or in homes. However, during the Pandemic we are only offering services via Telemedicine.
Interested applicants should first send an email to counseling@seyfs.org. Please attach a resume. Once your email is received you will be contacted and may be asked to send an application and clinical supplement (which will be emailed to you). If you are selected for interview that will be scheduled in a fairly timely fashion. The interview process always includes the supervising therapist.
