Lycan Counseling serves youth, young adults, partners, and families via telehealth throughout Washington State. Our focus is on providing safe and affirming support to queer and neurodivergent folks dealing with a variety of mental health concerns. Our overall mission is to provide hope and empower folks to create change in their lives and reach their goals. We believe that trust in a relationship begins with vulnerability and an understanding of the experiences that guide our approach. We believe that the systems we live under impact the way we think/feel, the way we show up and the way we deal with challenges. This site is 100% telehealth so we will not work with students who have an in person requirement for learning.
About Me
Hi! My name is Kim (she/her) and I'm the supervisor for interns with my group. As a queer, chronically ill, ADHDer and caregiver of my disabled adult parents, I have witnessed the impact of systems on mental health and overall wellness. My approach to therapy and to supervision is one that begins with that understanding and works to provide safe and affirming space for folks to start their journey. I won't ask you your theoretical orientation because your "elevator speech" answer to that tells me very little about who you are as a person and how you will actually show up in your values and beliefs about the people you sit with. I believe that I can teach almost any therapy skill or technique you may need to be successful in my group, any documentation, law/ethics rule, strategy for working with a challenging client. And I will and I do and I love doing that. What I cannot/will not be willing to put in the labor to teach is a baseline belief system that makes you a safe and affirming person for the clients I know I will draw. If that isn't there, we can't work together.
Generally, my website is a great way to get a feel for my values in terms of how I work with the providers on my team and how I view wellness and my role in that. I tend to be vocal about my values and engage in activism around my communities and values regularly. I don't believe in the concept of those things being 100% separate from your work and in fact believe the opposite. If we have a conversation, professionally or personally, you will hear some of who I am and what I think come out. You can also see how I structure my group to challenge inequitable norms within the healthcare system and other systems generally. You can see how my values show up in the way we present our providers to potential clients and work to make ourselves a welcoming and safe space for the community. How to Apply
To apply, please send a resume and cover letter talking about how you feel your experiences will add to, and fit with, our amazing team personally and professionally. This is a great opportunity to practice vulnerability and talk about how your lived experiences guide your thoughts on this.
Why choose us?
Just as I value safety and affirming support for my clients, I also value that for my team. I have spent the last two years developing my training program for students with the goal of providing a range of knowledge as well as individualized support that helps you develop into the therapist you want to be. I work from the premise of you being the boss of you in as many areas as possible including work hours.
Because of my approach which builds each term on knowledge gained in previous terms, I focus on students who are interested in working with me for practicum and all internship terms. I also specifically train with focus on skills and knowledge applicable to private practice work straight out of grad school. My limitation is that if you want to work community mental health out of school, you will be woefully unprepared for that should you intern with me. I can give you an understanding of various levels of care, but the way my group functions is very different from agency work or even other groups. If you are looking to feel prepared for the world of working for others, this is not the place for you.
