AP Both Unit 8 - Simple Harmonic Motion

Monday 1/11/21

  1. no livestream

  2. Unit 8 Notes here

  3. students made predictions of graphs of F,a,v, and x (all vs. t) for a mass oscillating without friction attached to a spring (all on a horizontal surface) ... the worksheet is here ... also made predictions for mass oscillating on a vertical spring

  4. discussed what graphs of Uel, K, and Etot for a mass oscillating w/o friction attached to a spring

  5. since students observed that the graphs above looked like sin and cos functions, we discussed what x(t)=Acos(wt+phi) looks like on desmos...noticed that A represents the amplitude, w is related to the frequency, and phi is the phase shift.

  6. discussed the solutions for x(t), v(t), and a(t) for a mass oscillating on a horizontal frictionless surface (we guessed a solution of the form x(t)=Acos(wt+phi) )

  7. Today's Recording

Tuesday 1/12/21

  1. no livestream

  2. Unit 8 Notes here

  3. select students took retake for Mechanics Exam 5. Non-testing students worked on Mooney gravitation review packet.

  4. reviewed deriving the solutions for x(t), v(t), and a(t) for a mass oscillating on a horizontal frictionless surface (we guessed a solution of the form x(t)=Acos(wt+phi) )

  5. discussed how to find K(t) and Uel(t)...found Etot(t) by adding K(t) and Uel(t)...discovered the total energy is constant and is equal to (1/2)kA^2

  6. Today's Recording

Wednesday 1/13/21

  3. discussed connection of SHM to uniform circular motion with this video

  4. worked a problem with initial conditions given at t=0, x(0), and v(0), k, and m...found w,T,A,phi

  5. showed how the simple pendulum is a SHO and determined the general solution...here is a link that explains the important small angle approximation

  6. derived solution for physical pendulum using torques

  7. revisited simple pendulum as a physical pendulum to show period was the same as when it was analyzed using forces

  8. introduced three examples of a physical pendulum: stick, hoop, and disk

  9. watched video of comparison of stick pendulum vs. traditional pendulum

  10. students spent any time left over working on Gravitation review packet from Mooney

  7. discussed torsion pendula

  8. reviewed all derived equations for SHM (x,v,a,Uel,K,Etot)

  9. discussed vertical mass/spring systems (result is that the period, y(t), etc. is determined exactly the same as if the system were horizontal) ... played around with vertical springs using this simulation
