In this writing project, students used what they learned about persuasive writing to write a persuasive email to the principal. They were required to use capitalization and punctuation. I taught creating a salutation in the email and a closing with their name. Ms. Hyland, our building principal, responded to all student emails.
The students loved doing this project. It was nice to change how we write for a portion of the unit. Writing emails is one of the new digital literacy standards for the K-1 grade band. This was an easy way to incorporate technology into what we are already doing in class. I found the students were able to transfer some of what they learned in opinion writing. I found that in their traditional writing packets, they were more likely to edit or revise their work than in the emails. I also noticed that in their writing packets they used many transition words but not as much in the emails. Next year, I will encourage them to use their same checklists they use in their writing packets for their emails.
