ADVISORY 04: Sites to Visit in Mumbai
“Urbs Prima in Indis" is a Latin phrase meaning "First City in India." It was a title given to Mumbai (formerly Bombay) during the British colonial era, reflecting its status as the most important city in India at the time, particularly in the context of trade and commerce. What was earlier an archipelago of seven islands was moulded over four centuries into a bustling port city by waves upon waves of traders, fortune-seekers, migrant workers, artists and intellectuals from all over. Today, it is a city of contrasts where the Gothic and Art Deco precincts retain their charm amidst brash skyscrapers and extreme wealth jostles with the can-do attitude of millions of people who are out and about every day, making their lives, making this city. Home to Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry, Mumbai is a melting pot of cultures.
Around Conference Venue: Dotted with cafes, restaurants, and bars, Juhu is an easygoing seaside neighbourhood that you can walk and explore on foot. You may hop across the road from the conference venue for a quick South-Indian snack and coffee at Banana Leaf or catch a late-evening film show at the PVR multiplex. Also very close to the conference venue is Granth, a warm and well-stocked book shop. To get a taste of Mumbai's artistic side, do make time to have a cutting-chai at the iconic Prithvi Theatre Cafe. If you wish to pick up gifts or make an emergency purchase, Krishna Curve and Dynamix Malls and the Linking Road market are a short auto-rickshaw/cab ride away.
