Phinder

Phinder is a free website designed by Dr. Devin Kearns to help reading teachers who are working with students on beginning phonics skills.

Teachers can find it labor-intensive to research words that contain the specific patterns they want students to learn during Structured Literacy lessons. This website is an amazing tool for cultivating lists of words that match the specific phoneme-grapheme correspondences you intend to teach.

If you need help using Phinder, here are a few easy to follow steps:

Step 1: Type a grapheme (a spelling) you would like to teach in the “Search Letter Pattern” box. A list of “Graphemes” will display. Click the one you want to teach. When you click, a list of phonemes will appear in the Step 2 box.

Step 2: From the list of “Phonemes”, click on the sound you want to teach. When you click, a correspondence appears in the Step 3 box.

Step 3: Now that you have selected both the grapheme and the phoneme, check to make sure that the correspondence is correct in the “Sound Spelling Selected” box. Then, click “Search For Words.”

You can adjust the word list by clicking on the “Options” tab. Here you can identify the number of syllables you want in the words displayed as well as the rate of frequency.
